College Laundry 101: What Parents Wish Their Students Knew

For many college students, doing laundry is a whole new world of responsibility. If you’ve ever received a frantic “How do I get this stain out?” text or seen a pile of unfolded clothes on a dorm bed, you’re not alone. Here’s a lighthearted but practical guide for students who need a little help mastering the art of laundry.

Laundry Basics Every College Student Should Know

  1. Sort Your Clothes
Whites, darks, and colors should be washed separately to prevent fading and stains. If you’re short on time, at least separate whites from colors.

  2. Don’t Overload the Machine
Jamming in every piece of clothing you own might seem efficient, but it prevents proper cleaning. Leave some room for water and detergent to circulate.

  3. Choose the Right Detergent
Liquid, pods, or powder? Pods are convenient but must be added before clothes, not on top. Don’t use too much detergent—it won’t make clothes cleaner!

  4. Water Temperature Matters
Hot: Best for whites, towels, and heavily soiled items. Warm: Good for most clothes, including jeans and mixed colors. Cold: Best for darks, delicates, and preventing shrinkage.

  5. Drying 101
Read clothing labels! Not everything belongs in the dryer. Shake out clothes before tossing them in to avoid wrinkles. Over-drying can shrink clothes, so use medium or low heat for most items.

  6. Stain Removal Tips
Act fast! Blot (don’t rub) stains and rinse with cold water. Use dish soap for grease stains, vinegar for sweat stains, and baking soda for odors. Avoid heat until the stain is gone—drying sets stains permanently.

Extra Tips for Parents

  • Send a laundry essentials kit with detergent, stain remover, and dryer sheets.
  • Create a simple cheat sheet for your student to follow.
  • Remind them that washing their bedding regularly is non-negotiable!

Laundry might not be glamorous, but mastering it is a small step toward adulthood. A little guidance (and patience) goes a long way in helping your student avoid laundry disasters!
